The design exceeded the 10,000 fan votes required to get Lego to consider the project for production. The original concept set design was submitted to Lego Ideas by Viv Grannell, a UK-based Sonic fan.

Although Sonic the Hedgehog technically received the Lego treatment alongside the toys-to-life game Lego Dimensions, a full Lego set starring Sega's iconic mascot has never been released. The fan-created design doesn't have a release date or price yet. Featuring a wide variety of elements inspired by Classic Sonic, the set will provide LEGO collectors and Sonic fans alike a truly supersonic LEGO experience.Lego is now moving forward with production on Sonic Mania: Green Hill Zone, a set submitted to the Lego Ideas platform. Viv’s design was inspired by SEGA’s critically acclaimed 2017 platformer experience Sonic Mania™, and features iconic characters and environments from the game’s Green Hill Zone level. Viv, also a passionate Sonic fan, created her design as a submission to the LEGO Ideas® platform, a LEGO initiative that takes new ideas that have been imagined and voted for by fans and turns them into reality. Back in 2019, one creative Sonic fan embarked on a LEGO Ideas campaign to get her conceptual Sonic Mania set turned into reality – and quickly gained 10,000 votes of support from the community.
